The surface of the kama (tea kettle) still has a rough texture, but it will develop a nice patina with use. When paired with a karakane furo (tea ceremony brazier), its imposing size gives it a dignified feel. It doesn't seem to suit a slightly smaller furo. ◆ Mannya-gama (tea kettle) One of the shapes of tea ceremony kettles, it has oni-men kanazuke (demon-face handles), two lines on the shoulder and waist, and a suriza (a raised ring) in between. The Mannya-gama is said to have been made by Tenmei, favored by Rikyu, and commissioned to Tsuji Yojiro, then given to his son-in-law, Mannya-ya Soan, which is the origin of the name. Mannya-gama has various mouth shapes, such as hiroguchi (wide mouth), waguchi (ring mouth), and kuriguchi (curved mouth). There are also variations with tomo-mon (comma crest) on the shoulder instead of a suriza, and some with a suriza on the mouth edge.
