After swarming, Japanese honeybees first form a bee cluster on tree trunks and other places, and then move to a new dwelling place guided by scout bees. At that time, if there is a gathering board coated with plenty of attractant liquid and beeswax, the bee cluster will form on the gathering board with a high probability, centering on the queen bee. (Photo 2) Once a bee cluster forms on the gathering board, capturing and moving it to a new beehive is very easy and reliable. Every year, I set up multiple gathering boards in multiple locations along with waiting boxes, and the bees have flown to and gathered on the gathering boards multiple times. The formation of a bee cluster on the gathering board is temporary, so I inspect and capture them regularly during the swarming season. (Weekend beekeeping channel uploaded) The capture method is relatively simple: prepare a two-tiered waiting box with a top board upside down (Photo 6), gently place the gathering board with the bee cluster on top (Photo 7), and after a while, turn the gathering board upside down as well (Photo 8). I have tried various materials for the surface of the gathering board, such as palm bark, bamboo, shade net, and metal mesh, but the metal mesh was the most effective. Also, after trial and error with the material, diameter, and pitch of the mesh, I arrived at this product. ◇◇ Although I do not guarantee capture, I believe that if Japanese honeybees are living nearby, the possibility of capturing them is very high. Also, for those who are already keeping bees, if the place where the bee cluster forms after swarming is on the trunk of a tall tree, etc., where a net cannot reach, you will have to give up capturing them, so I am proud to say that this is a particularly essential item for existing beekeepers. ◇◇ It is effective to apply attractant liquid and beeswax to the gathering board regularly during the season, just like the waiting box.
