The Kitamae-bune played an important role as the artery of the Japanese economy from the mid-Edo period to the early Meiji era. It carried Hokuriku rice, Kansai cotton, miscellaneous goods, Hokkaido kelp, etc., up and down the Sea of Japan and the Seto Inland Sea.
