Characteristics of Labradorite Labradorite is a stone that changes color depending on the viewing angle and has an aurora-like glow. Labradorite belongs to a group of minerals called feldspar, the same group as moonstone and sunstone. The cause of the aurora-like glow is due to the alignment of thin layers of metallic minerals parallel to specific faces of the crystal. Light is dispersed at the boundaries of these layers, creating an iridescent pattern. This optical effect is called "labradorescence."
