Twelfth-generation Taroemon Nakazato, work: Kinuta Iron-E Painted Karatsu Sake Vessel. The twelfth generation was later designated a Living National Treasure (Intangible Cultural Property) and went by the name "Mu-an." The generous construction and sweeping brushstrokes are unmatched. The landscape is created by areas of exposed clay without glaze in several places on the grass pattern. Depending on the angle of the light, these areas can appear to glow with a subdued gold color. There are no kiln marks on this piece. Although not new, it shows little of the character that comes with use, and it seems like it will become more interesting as it is used. He devoted himself to the revival of the techniques of old Karatsu pottery and was designated in 1976. Main achievements: Research on Old Karatsu: He researched and revived the techniques of simple Karatsu ware from the Momoyama period (such as the tataki technique), which had been lost. Technical Preservation: His skills were recognized, and he was selected as a technical preservation artist in 1941 and as an intangible cultural property in 1955. Representative Works: He produced the "Tataki Ao-Karatsu Jar" for presentation, and some of his works were purchased by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
