A stagecoach heading to Lordsburg, New Mexico, departs carrying five passengers: Boone (T. Mitchell), a drunken doctor who can't pay his rent; Dallas (C. Trevor), a prostitute banished by the Ladies' League; Lucy, pregnant and on her way to meet her husband in Apache territory; Hatfield, a gambler; and Peacock, a liquor salesman. They are joined by Buck, the driver, and Curly, the sheriff, as their escort. Along the way, Gatewood, a bank president who embezzled the miners' wages, boards the coach. As the stagecoach, escorted by cavalry, continues its journey, gunshots suddenly ring out, and the coach stops. Standing there is Ringo Kid (J. Wayne), an escaped convict with a bounty on his head. Curly knows that Ringo is heading to Lordsburg to avenge the Plummer brothers, who killed his father and brother. After the cavalry leaves, the group is forced to stop at the next station because Lucy goes into labor. Ringo proposes to Dallas, who is taking care of the newborn baby, but Dallas urges him to escape. Ringo, having stolen a horse, notices smoke signals rising from the surrounding mountains and gives up on fleeing. As they finally approach their destination, Lordsburg, and Boone proposes a toast to their safety, an Apache arrow pierces Peacock's chest...
