In 2015, marking exactly 60 years since Shimura-san began her career in dyeing and weaving in 1955, this exhibition looks back on her long creative journey and traces its roots. This exhibition introduces 60 years of creation, from Shimura-san's early works from the late 1950s, which were her starting point, to her latest works, which are being shown for the first time. In addition, the exhibition features valuable dyeing and weaving works by Shimura-san's mother, Toyo Ono, and the dyeing and weaving artist Goro Aota, who instructed Ono. It also showcases masterpieces by wood lacquer artist Tatsuaki Kuroda and ceramic artist Kenkichi Tomimoto, who supported and encouraged Shimura-san's activities, allowing visitors to explore the world of Fukumi Shimura's works and their source. The works of Goro Aota on display this time are derived from the collection of Tamesaburo Yamamoto, which forms the core of the museum's collection. As we explore Shimura-san's starting point, the museum, which has the only comprehensive collection of Aota's works in Japan, has made it possible to realize this unique exhibition.
