I repurposed a kimono to make a hanten (Japanese padded coat). The lining is cotton-padded quilting, making it very warm. The collar overlaps like a kimono, preserving the traditional Japanese clothing style. I made this with men in mind, but women can wear it too. If hand washing, wash quickly by pressing, use fabric softener, lightly spin dry, hang to dry in the shade, and use a pressing cloth when ironing.
