It is a double-edged blade with a hi (groove) featuring a notare-gunome (undulating pattern) with a straight yakiba (tempered edge), said to have been originated by Izumi no Kami Kanesada. It is believed to be modeled after the yaibitsu (arrow quiver) part of a bow and arrow. Kanesada-style swords are known for their sharpness and are designated as "wazamono" (swords of superior craftsmanship). It is famous that Hijikata Toshizo, the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, favored and carried this type of sword.
