Regarding the Year of the Fire Horse (丙午): The phrase "Year of the Fire Horse: Great Good Fortune" is a humorous expression that plays on the superstition, claiming that the Year of the Fire Horse is actually very auspicious. These are katashiro (human-shaped paper) used in the Great Purification (Ōharai) ceremony. By writing your name and age on the paper in the shape of a person and breathing on it, you transfer your impurities (kegare) to it, using it as a substitute.
