This is a thick cotton scrap of old Japanese indigo dye, purchased from an antique dealer from Kuramae, Tokyo, at the Heian Flea Market, a famous antique market in Okazaki, Kyoto. (I seem to recall being told it was from Okayama.) Approximately 150cm x 120cm. It is likely that this was taken from a kimono. I fell in love at first sight with the deep, beautiful, authentic indigo color and the way the wear, fading, and holes in the center resembled a galaxy. I bought it for a price that was a bit of a splurge for me, but I haven't found a use for it, so it's a shame to let it go to waste. I'm hoping someone who can make good use of it will take it. It's frustrating that I can't quite capture it in the photos... In reality, it has a stunning gradation of indigo with a hint of green. I think the colors in the first and second photos are the closest to the actual color. I've kept it stored in a dark place at home for several years, and I can faintly smell the indigo dye, but it's mostly odorless. There is some fraying in the seams (photo 18). There is a lot of damage and holes, especially in the center, but that's what makes it so cool and gives it a rich texture. You could enjoy darning it, etc. You can remake it or use it as is. How about using it for unique interior decor or fashion accessories? Please read my profile before purchasing. Thank you.
