This is an ornament of the Yamata no Orochi (Eight-Headed Serpent). Originally, Kagura was danced by ancient people to pray for good health and rejuvenation of the soul, and it is said that this ritual of soul-soothing and purification is the origin of various Shinto rituals and performing arts. The head is made by molding clay, carefully layering Japanese paper, applying a coating of gofun (a white pigment made from oyster shells), and then coloring it. The body has a bamboo frame with Japanese paper attached. It is fixed with wire inside, so you can freely change its shape. *Persimmon tannin is used as an insect repellent.
