This is a sake cup washer I purchased from an antique shop in Tokyo about 10 years ago. It has gorgeous, vibrant colors. The size makes it quite impressive. It depicts a scene of the Pure Land. The inside features a grass pattern, surrounded by treasures. As you can see, it's a high-quality item, so there's not much more to say. I was told by the shop owner that it dates back to the Meiji era. There is a crack. There is also a kiln scar on the body in one place. Please check the images carefully. About the sake cup washer: Recently, it's also been used as a flower vase. Because it has a shallow, wide mouth, it's used as a water basin for ikebana flower arrangements. I think it could also be used like a compote. In fact, it's said that Western compotes are based on sake cup washers that were exported during the Edo period. Western-style arrangements also look great. I personally place a large plate on top and use it as a cake stand for afternoon tea. The guests' reactions are always great, and we have a wonderful time. Before placing the plate, I hide some small sweets inside the sake cup washer. When I say, "Let me tidy up a bit," and remove the plate, there's a surprise of sweets! It's a fun trick. I've also hidden tiramisu inside. People say, "Oh, there's still something big!" Also, if you put ice in it and place cakes or other cream-based sweets on top, it will keep them cool and slow down the melting of the cream.
