The curtain rises on this colossal story with the line, "Call me Ishmael." Nishijiro Tanaka's translation is quite good. Tanaka's translation is often described as "faithful," and perhaps a person's character is reflected in their translation. Tanaka also has a rich vocabulary, and simply reading it seems to expand one's Japanese vocabulary. I recommend it. Also, I think the artwork on the cover of this old binding is wonderful.
