About the Author Rieko Nakagawa is an author. Born in Sapporo in 1935. After graduating from Tokyo Metropolitan Higher Nursery School, she became the head nursery teacher at Midori Nursery School. While working as a nursery teacher, she continued to write as a member of the children's literature group Itadori. She worked as a nursery teacher for 17 years until 1972. In 1962, she received the Minister of Health and Welfare Award, the NHK Children's Literature Encouragement Award, the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award, and the Noma Children's Literature Award Recommendation Award for "Iya Iya En." The following year, "Guri and Gura" was published. She received the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award for "Koinu no Roku ga Yatte Kita." Her main works include the picture book "Guri and Gura" series, "Sorairo no Tane," "Momoiro no Kirin," the fairy tale "Kaeru no Eruta," and the essays "Picture Books and Me" and "Books, Children, and Picture Books." She is also known for writing the lyrics to the song "Sanpo" from the movie "My Neighbor Totoro." "Guri and Gura" has been translated into 10 languages to date.
