● This is a modified Alesis 3630 Compressor. ◯ It's a 1U size, 2-channel combination of compressor and gate. The internal circuit is very simple, with only the signal passing through the input buffer ~ VCA ~ output buffer, resulting in very high sound quality. ◯ You can switch between Peak and RMS (average) modes. Peak is suitable for tightly controlling the attack of drums, while RMS provides a natural compression effect for overall processing. ◯ The sound quality is remarkably natural, with almost no change even when reducing by 20dB. Being a 2-channel unit, it can be used for snare and kick, vocals and bass, or as a total compressor, making it useful for both recording and live performances. The minimal change in sound and its small, lightweight design make it convenient for live performances and recordings. ◯ Modifications include replacement of the power supply diodes and capacitors, metal film resistors in the signal path, tantalum capacitors for better sound quality, and the high-speed National Semiconductor LME49740 op-amps for improved audio performance. ◯ The gate has been modified with a switchable potentiometer to bypass it. Turning the gate knob fully to zero clicks, bypassing the gate circuit. ◯ It's very popular in the US as a classic unit, with modification kits even being sold. It has been made into a VST plugin called NightShine, and searching will yield many articles. One website even nominated it as the 20th best compressor of all time, alongside legendary units like the Fairchild 670 and Urei 1176. ◯ Included accessories are a general-purpose power supply and a self-made sidechain filter.
