After the aging process, the dense fiber layer that exists only on the horse's rump, called the cordovan layer, is shaved off from the back side, and then dyed, finished, and aged again. Oil cordovan is made over a period of about 10 months, from the start of tanning to the finishing process. The unique transparency, luster, and depth of color of oil cordovan are created by using dyes for color adjustment, applying chemicals to the surface of the leather containing special oils, and then using a special machine to rub and smooth the surface, a process called glazing.
