Pattern/Design...Other Hoteichiku and Kikko Bamboo Specialist, Takeho Workshop, is represented by Takeshita of Hiroshima. These are bamboo walking sticks crafted in my workshop over approximately one year, using natural Hoteichiku and Kikko bamboo. These are rare, Hoteichiku and Kikko bamboo. Hoteichiku is characterized by its shorter nodes, a mutation of Madake bamboo. It's named Hoteichiku because it resembles the bulging belly of Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods. Kikko bamboo gets its name from its pattern, which resembles a turtle's shell (Kikko). Hoteichiku is considered a good luck item. The process involves harvesting natural Hoteichiku and Kikko bamboo, followed by cleaning (removing dirt), and natural drying for about two months. After that, the surface is lightly burned to remove some of the oil, and then wiped. After the burned bamboo cools, it is polished with rice bran regularly for about a year. During this time, the moisture naturally evaporates, making it considerably lighter than when it started. The burning process creates a unique pattern. All patterns are similar. The patterns are original to our workshop. The walking sticks do not come with rubber tips at the bottom, but customers can attach their own. If you need a walking stick rubber tip, we can install one for 1000 yen, though the usual price is 1500 yen.
