Born in Nagano Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts). He was in charge of the cover illustration for the first issue of the children's magazine "Kodomo no Kuni" and later became the head of the illustration department. He coined the term "Doga" for children's art and elevated it to the realm of art. Published by ARS, "Nihon Jido Bunko" Vol. 15, "Nihon Dowa Shu (Upper)" is a series of high documentary value, symbolizing the children's culture movement from the Taisho to early Showa periods.
