The name comes from "the first boots being manufactured in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, the residential area of Native Americans (Chippewa tribe)." The "Modern Suburban" model, released in 1955, was designed as "boots for a modern and active lifestyle." It was the first outdoor and casual style model in the ORIGINAL CHIPPEWA line at the time. Notably, the double-name outsole, a collaboration with Vibram, has been reproduced. This is the only MADE in U.S.A. collaboration sole in the world. The seamless suede upper reduces stress around the instep, and the vibrant suede allows for styling with American casual styles as well as high-quality materials and designs, making it a highly versatile model.
