Shonai Sashiko is one of the three major types of sashiko in Japan, along with Tsugaru Kogin-zashi and Nanbu Hishizashi. The intricate patterns, embroidered with white cotton thread on indigo-dyed cotton cloth, reinforced work clothes and increased their warmth. These patterns became symbolic decorations, incorporating people's wishes and prayers for a good harvest, warding off evil, and prosperity in business.
