This is a girl's hitotsumi (ceremonial kimono for newborns) with a juban (undershirt). It's primarily red and features auspicious motifs for girls' kimonos, such as peonies, cherry blossoms, temari balls, and mandarin ducks. Mandarin ducks symbolize marital harmony, and the kichou (folding screen) represents wealth and splendor. Hitotsumi refers to a kimono for infants aged 0-2 years old. It's easier to understand if you imagine the celebratory kimono that babies typically wear for their Hatsumiyamairi (Shinto shrine visit). A characteristic of the hitotsumi is that it's made without a back seam, using standard-width fabric. When dressing a baby, there's no shoulder tucking or hip tucking, and a detachable collar is used instead of an obi (sash).
