Real name Yoshizo. Born in Kyobashi, Tokyo. In 1905 (Meiji 38), he entered the studio of Hanko Kajita, and in 1920 (Taisho 9), he lived in the studio of his senior, Kokei Kobayashi, and received his guidance. In 1923, he became a research member of the Japan Art Institute, and although he exhibited at the In-ten for the first time the following year, he was rejected, and he was in a state of confusion in his production for a while. In 1927 (Showa 2), "Cucumber Field" was selected for the first time at the 14th In-ten, and in 1932, he was recommended as a member of the Japan Art Institute. In 1936, "Duck" was ranked first in the recommendation at the 1st Tei-ten, and from 1942 to after World War II, he served as a judge for the Shin-Bunten and Nitten, and in 1947 (Showa 22), he was appointed as a member of the Imperial Art Academy. From 1948 onwards, he mainly exhibited at the In-ten, Seiryu-kai, and Saiko-kai. His subjects are wide-ranging, including flowers and birds, figures, and landscapes, but his sincere and deeply warm attitude of observation is consistent, and "Dancer," "Naruto," "Woman at the Morning Market," "Daigo," and "Monk" are well known. From 1944 to 1951, he was a lecturer at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1962, he received the Order of Culture.
