(Koan 6?-Shohei 8?・Bunwa 2?)★ A poet and essayist of the Kamakura and Nanboku-cho periods. His secular name was Urabe Kaneyoshi. The Urabe clan was a family of Shinto priests. He lived in Yoshida, Kyoto, and was also called Yoshida. He was from a lower-ranking court noble family and became a priest around the age of 30. He studied waka poetry under Nijo Tameyo and was included in the imperial anthologies from the "Zoku Senzai Wakashu" onwards. He was known as one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Waka poetry, along with Ton'a, Joben, and Keion. He was also versed in Confucianism and Taoism, and his "Essays in Idleness" is considered a representative work of essay literature along with "The Pillow Book." His personal collection is "Kenko Hoshi Jisen Kashu."
