Maeda Toshiharu, the first lord of the Daishoji domain, a branch of Kaga, noticed the discovery of pottery stone in the gold mine of Kutani (present-day Kutani-machi, Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture), and ordered Goto Saijiro, who was in charge of refining gold in the gold mine, to study pottery in Hizen Arita. It is said that the kiln was built in Kutani by introducing that technology. The Kutani kiln was suddenly closed in the early 1700s, but the reason is still unknown. What was fired during this period is later called Ko-Kutani (old Kutani), and is highly valued as a representative of Japanese colored porcelain with its unique and powerful style.
