Born on June 25, 845. Third son of Sugawara no Koreyoshi. Monjo Hakase (Doctor of Literature). Highly regarded by Emperor Uda. In 894, he proposed the cancellation of the envoy to Tang China. Became Udaijin (Minister of the Right) in 899, but due to slander by Sadaijin (Minister of the Left) Fujiwara no Tokihira, he was demoted to Dazaigon no Sochi (Provisional Governor of Dazaifu) and died in Dazaifu on February 25, 903. Age 59. Feared for his curse, he was posthumously awarded the rank of Shoichii (Senior First Rank) and the title of Daijo Daijin (Grand Minister of State), and was worshipped as Tenjin (Deity of Scholarship). His azana (courtesy name) was San. Commonly known as Kanke or Kanko.
