This item came from my grandmother's storehouse. I don't know the details, but it's a zelkova craft item by a craftsman of the Shosoin Treasure House style. It's hand-carved and has a nice feel, fitting comfortably in the palm of your hand. Although there may be some age-related deterioration, it's very light and I think it would be a good item for everyday use.
