This is a Mani wheel (mani guruma), a Tibetan Buddhist prayer tool purchased from a Buddhist supply store near the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. The outer cylinder is decorated with the six-syllable mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" and five stones. Inside are scrolls of mantras. It is believed that turning the wheel clockwise is the same as reciting the scriptures as many times as it is rotated, and it is considered a beneficial tool.
