This is a live album recorded in 1969 at the Hollywood club Donte's, led by Emil Richards, an unusual percussionist and vibraphone player who was active from the mid-50s. Although he's not well-known in Japan, this talented musician, who later worked on film scores, has a unique groove and deserves more attention as a rare groove artist. The quintet features Dave MacKay (p), Ray Neapolitan (b), Joe Porcaro (ds), and Mark Stevens (perc). The equally non-mainstream but highly skilled side musicians provide excellent support. US Original Impulse AS-9182 stereo The gatefold coated jacket has a punch hole but is in good condition with minimal aging. The record also has very little noise. My favorites are "All Blue," a modal blues song that parodies Miles Davis's famous "All Blues," and "One Tooth Grin," an eight-beat, odd-time blues tune. The album also includes a rendition of Duke Jordan's "Jordu," making for a very satisfying listening experience.
