In the early 20th century America, it was loved by travelers as a "steamer rug" (a blanket for steamships), a blanket that was easy to carry. In an era when old-style transportation such as horse-drawn carriages, trains, and ships was the mainstream, people traveling in the cold needed a compact blanket. Made with pure virgin wool and a soft napped (brushed) finish, it was warm and lightweight, and became very popular as a lap blanket or rug for people who traveled frequently.
