[Exhibition Overview] "Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window" by Johannes Vermeer, a representative painter of 17th-century Holland, is an early masterpiece in which Vermeer established his own style, with its depiction of light streaming in from the window and the figure of a woman reading a letter indoors. In an X-ray examination in 1979, it was discovered that a painting within the painting, a Cupid, had been painted over on the wall, and for many years it was thought that Vermeer himself had erased it. However, the latest research results, announced in 2019, revealed that the painting within the painting was erased by someone after Vermeer's death. In this exhibition, "Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window," which has been restored to its original appearance with the Cupid painting within the painting appearing through a large-scale restoration project, will be unveiled following its presentation at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden, the museum that owns the painting. This will be the first time it has been shown outside of the museum.
