Taiwan was under Japanese rule from the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895 until the end of the war in 1945. During this time, civil servants, corporate employees, and agricultural workers, among others, crossed the sea from Japan to Taiwan as immigrants. Most of them were forcibly repatriated to mainland Japan after Japan's defeat, due to the policies of the Republic of China. The number of repatriates reached 500,000, of which about 200,000 were "Wansei" who were born and raised in Taiwan. The film follows the elderly "Wansei" as they visit their Taiwanese homeland from Japan, 70 years after the war, depicting their lives and the feelings of those who were repatriated. This film was nominated for Best Documentary at the Golden Horse Awards, known as the Taiwanese Academy Awards, and won the Audience Award at the Osaka Asian Film Festival 2016.
