It can be used without it, but it seems that your voice will be clearer to the other party if you have one. You can purchase one at large electronics retailers or on Amazon. (Brand: Big Hashi Headset intercom microphone sponge noise reduction microphone cover, about 450 yen) I realized the instruction manual wasn't included after purchase, so I downloaded it from the website.
