Old Dousojin doll. Wood carving and Japanese paper. It is old, so there are scratches and stains commensurate with its age, and damage to the Japanese paper. It is also not very sturdy, so please be aware of this beforehand. I believe it is related to the Dousojin Festival held in Nozawa Onsen. The dolls, which are modeled after a man and a woman, are said to represent "Yachimatahiko-no-kami" (male) and "Yachimatahime-no-kami" (female). Because of their unsightly appearance, these two gods were unable to find a husband or wife. However, when they were united, a boy was born, and they are considered to be gods of matchmaking and fertility.
