Fushimi Ningyo Kiln Tanka - Monkey Choro Size: Approximately 125mm high x 105mm wide x 90mm deep Fushimi dolls, originating in Kyoto, are considered the beginning of Japanese clay dolls. Fushimi dolls, with their long history, were first made using clay from Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto and are said to have the oldest history in Japan. During their peak in the mid-Edo period, many kilns lined the streets, but after the pre-war and post-war Showa era, many closed down, and now only Fushimi Ningyo Kiln Tanka remains. "Choroken," a New Year's street performance popular in Kyoto and Osaka during the Edo period. Fushimi dolls modeled after the fun street performance "Choroken" include Tokusu Choro and Ofuku Choro, and the "Monkey Choro" is made in the Year of the Monkey, which occurs every 12 years.
