“Wakiai Zen no Haru” (A Harmonious Spring) This is a suitable hanging scroll for a spring tea ceremony. "Waki" refers to the tranquil spring weather, and "Aizen" expresses a calm and satisfied state. Therefore, it means that the warm and gentle atmosphere of spring was soothing to people. The inscription reads "Sokoku Mui Hachijū-issai Nōsho" (Written by the 81-year-old monk of Mui-shitsu of Sokoku Temple). On the lid of the accompanying box, it says "Wakiai Zen no Haru Ichigyō Ippuku" (A Harmonious Spring, One Line, One Scroll), and on the inside of the lid, the seal reads "Sokoku Mui-shitsu Nōdai-sho" (Inscribed by the monk of Mui-shitsu of Sokoku Temple). The mounting is a rare paper mounting, and it has a simple, wabi-sabi style. More than 60 years have passed since it was written, and the mounting is likely from that time (in its original state), with overall stains and some wrinkles. Born in Shimane Prefecture. His room name was Mui-shitsu. His art name was Daiko. He received tonsure under Eigan of Zuiko-ji Temple in Shimane Prefecture. He entered Tenryu Sodo. He studied under Takagi Ryuen and Hashimoto Gazan. He served as the Shike (head teacher) of Sokoku Sodo and the Kancho (chief administrator) of the Sokoku-ji Temple sect. He passed away in 1966 at the age of 92.
