This is a wooden totem pole called "Jangseung" in Korea, used as a ward against evil spirits and disasters. In the past, large Jangseung were erected at the entrances of villages, serving as guardian deities to drive away evil spirits and mark village boundaries. This Jangseung is a vintage piece made in the 70s, crafted from relatively good quality wood, and has developed a unique patina over time, giving it a wonderful atmosphere. Its intense expression might seem a bit intimidating at first glance, but it also has a humorous quality. The phrase "地下女将軍" (Chika Jo Shogun - Underground Female General) is carved around its torso. It would make a great accent for a bohemian style home, or as an interior piece for a themed cafe, vintage clothing store, or any establishment seeking a unique conversation starter. We particularly recommend placing it on the counter of a snack bar, especially if it's an underground one – that would be perfect.
