Originally, they had the meaning of taking on misfortune in place of a person. They are ornamental dolls made in Kyoto during the mid-Edo period. They were displayed at celebrations in the Imperial Court, such as births and weddings. With a three-headed body, translucent white skin, plump hands and feet, and a round body shape, they represent abundance and are considered auspicious. They are made of wood, repeatedly coated with gofun (a white pigment made from oyster shells) and polished to create a white and beautiful skin. Heian Nishiki-zome Toshio Fujiwara succeeded as the third generation of Heian Nishiki-zome. For 80 years since his grandfather's generation, he has been producing Kyo Ningyo (Hina dolls and May dolls) and ceramic Gosho Ningyo and Kyo-to Ningyo.
