Saki-ori Rug / Table Runner This is a table runner made of saki-ori, a type of woven fabric. Saki-ori is a very labor-intensive weaving technique where old cloth is torn into thin strips to create the weft threads, which are then woven one row at a time. The finished product is like a work of art, with a unique sense of design that makes each piece one-of-a-kind. It embodies the wisdom and skill of the Japanese people, who have found a way to revive old fabrics into beautiful textiles. This piece uses a variety of shades of gray, natural, and beige threads for the warp, creating the deep colors and texture that are characteristic of saki-ori. It's a lovely item. The front and back have the same pattern. I bought two of these, intending to make a noren (Japanese split curtain) (see the last photo). However, I never used them.
