This book contains three works published between 1998 and 2011: "American Night," "a shimmer of possibility," and "The Present." These three photo collections are each a contemplation of the social organization of modern America, as well as an exploration of the world as it exists today. "American Night" (2003) explores social disparities in America through contrasts such as light and darkness, presence and absence. It includes images taken in dazzling light, where almost nothing can be seen, and, in contrast, works that vividly capture residential areas under the California sky. "a shimmer of possibility" (2007) is an epic poem that celebrates the small things and the beauty of chance. Twelve photographs become cinematic haiku, depicting everyday life in America. The book captures people waiting for buses, mowing lawns, and smoking cigarettes.
