This is an old "Tai-nori Kintaro" (Kintaro riding a sea bream), a type of traditional craft known as "Konosu no Akamono" from Saitama Prefecture. Unlike papier-mâché, "nerimono" is a craft made by hardening sawdust with glue. Konosu has records of producing various motifs of toys, not only local ones but also those made to order from outside. In recent years, this technique has been designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Among these, the most famous is this "Tai-nori Kintaro," commonly known as "Tai-kin." While it seems to still be produced today, the painting, especially the facial expression, is exquisite and characteristic of vintage items. This vintage piece was purchased around 2018 at "Bath House," the shop and office of "Swimsuit Department" in Kita-Aoyama, Tokyo. After purchase, it was kept in a corner of my living room (a dark place with no direct sunlight), so there is no subsequent sun fading or discoloration. However, due to the nature of Konosu nerimono, there are paint chips, cracks, and chips on the back due to age, so please understand this. Dimensions are: width 90 x depth 40 x height 90mm. As I personally like vintage furniture and used clothing, I have stored it with them, so those who are particularly sensitive to odors should be cautious when bidding.
