# Tail Feather Battledore This is an Oshie battledore (a decorative paddle used in the traditional Japanese game of hanetsuki) with a Kabuki motif, kept in its box as part of a collection and never displayed. Based on the facial features and choice of materials, I suspect it was made by the late Kozetsu Nishiyama. Performance: Uirouri (The Medicine Seller) Roles: Uirouri (The Medicine Seller), actually Goro Tokimochi Soga Actors: Kanzaburo Nakamura / Danjuro Ichikawa On the back is the family crest of Kanzaburo Nakamura, a sumikiri ginnan (a ginkgo leaf within a square), and on the front fan is the family crest of Danjuro Ichikawa, a mimasu (three rice measures). When I researched the Kabukiza performances, I found records of Ebizo Ichikawa performing Uirouri, but I couldn't find any records of Kanzaburo performing it. They may have co-starred in a different role. It's uncertain. The facial features are beautifully drawn, and the detailed craftsmanship is impressive. I believe it was made around the mid-Showa period, and it's a luxurious specification with three sheets of gold leaf applied to the paulownia board. The use of period fabrics, cords, and silk threads is also pleasing for antique lovers. Although it's a period piece, it's in very good condition, with no visible scratches or stains. There is only some aging on the box. Please remember the beautiful stage performances of Danjuro and Kanzaburo with this small battledore during the New Year. It was originally made for framing, but if you want to display it standing up, please lean it against something as shown in the photo.
