Ootani-yaki pottery began in the late Edo period (An'ei 9, 1780), originating when Buneimon, a potter from Bungo Province (Oita Prefecture), made pottery from the red clay of Ootani Village. It uses local soil that contains a high amount of iron, and is characterized by its rough texture and subtle metallic sheen.
