The name is said to have originated from "Hi-otoko" (fire man), who blew fire in a bamboo tube in a "kamado" (kitchen stove), and thus Hyottoko is a "god who protects fire," diligently working for someone by blowing fire in a bamboo tube in the kitchen stove.
