His father was a stone sculptor and his mother was a flower arrangement artist. After graduating from Nihon University College of Art, he was deeply influenced by the pottery spirit of Arakawa Toyozo, a Living National Treasure, and began research on Oni-Shino. He studied painting, photography, and color theory under Shinseimei, Kanemaru Shigei, and Taguchi Ryuzaburo, while also becoming a devotee of the Soto Zen sect. He presented Oni-Shino works from the Tensho kiln, which scientifically investigated the Momoyama era's old kilns.
