This is a Ryumon-nuri tea caddy. The pattern is continuous between the body and the lid, so it looks stylish whether you align the pattern perfectly or offset it slightly. Each one seems to have a unique painted pattern. When the lid is opened, it reveals a matte black lacquer finish. It is Naruko lacquerware, and the word "Naruko" is inscribed. This item was on display in a shop in the 1970s. The item has been opened for inspection but is unused.
