This item came from an old house. A local toy unique to the Hitoyoshi and Kuma regions of Kumamoto Prefecture, the "Kijima" (pheasant horse). It has been cherished since ancient times as a lucky charm to pray for the healthy growth of children. Legend has it that it was first made by the Heike clan's refugees, reminiscing about their glamorous life in the capital. It has a wooden body with wheels made from sliced pine logs, and is characterized by the vibrant red and yellow patterns on the body. The character "大" (dai, meaning "big") is painted on the head, said to have been carved by the Heike refugees while thinking of the Daimonji fire festival in Kyoto.
