A traditional craft passed down for hundreds of years in the Sasano area of Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. It is said to have originated when Yozan Uesugi, the ninth lord of the Yonezawa domain, encouraged it as a side job for farmers in winter, and it has been cherished as a talisman against evil and a good luck charm for "increasing one's income." Work by the sixth generation, Kanpu Toda. With its beautifully curled tail and sharp eyes, boasting realistic painting, it is one of the representative toys of the Tohoku region.
