The principal image is Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu. Known for its connection to Ono no Komachi, and also known for the "Hanezu Odori" dance. It began as a sub-temple of Ushihizan Mandara-ji Temple, founded by Priest Ningai (the founder of the Ono school of Shingon Buddhism) on land bestowed by Emperor Ichijo. It became a place of prayer for Emperors Juntoku, Go-Horikawa, and Shijo. It became a Monzeki temple (a temple where members of the Imperial family or the Sekke families served as chief priests) by the decree of Emperor Go-Horikawa. It was destroyed in the Jokyu War and the Onin War. It was renamed from the Shingon sect Ono school to the Shingon sect Zentsuji school (with Zentsuji, the birthplace of Kukai, as its head temple).
