The Thunderbird was developed as a lightweight two-seater sports car to compete with GM's first Corvette, but from the second generation onwards, it gained rear seats and became larger and more luxurious. The 6th generation Thunderbird, which reached the pinnacle of this enlargement, was called the "Big Bird."
